“I love colour” – for most of us who say this, we genuinely do love colour and yet vibrant colour, in Australia, is generally something we reserve for inside the house – the exteriors of our homes are normally neutrals, ‘non-offensive’ colours chosen not to compete with the rest of the street. Which is why I find it refreshing visiting a place like El Salvador, Georgia, or even parts of Singapore where colour comes into its element on buildings exteriors. Here, colour is shared, not contained. One of my favorite things about traveling is looking at the way colour is treated in different countries and from city to city and season to season. Next on my list of colourful exterior destinations is St John’s in Newfoundland, Canada. Not shy of splashing brilliant hues all over their houses, the residents of St John’s seem to know a thing or two about creating a cheerful colour scene around town.

I’m not suggesting you paint the exterior of your house a vivid green or anything (for those of us who are renting that might not go down so well with the landlord) – after all, colourful exteriors are not everyone’s cup of tea. I’m merely hoping that like me you have been able to enjoy a little exterior colour eye candy.
